Systems — Drift, Legibility, and Civilization
This folder examines how systems drift away from their founding purposes — through metric optimization, proxy capture, and the suppression of variance — and what the structural alternatives look like. The analysis operates at two scales: the individual (where drift is maintained by justification) and the civilizational (where drift follows from scaling dynamics that are structurally inevitable unless actively countered).
Documents
1 - legibility trap.md — The Exploration–Legibility Trap: A Structural Model of Civilizational Drift Toward Optimization, Simulation, and Fragility A formal structural model. Large-scale successful societies face a consistent gradient: scale → accountability → measurement → metricization → proxy governance → optimization. Each step is locally rational; the aggregate effect is systemic distortion. Covers proxy capture law, variety collapse, exploration–exploitation lock, epistemic convergence, cognitive selection effects, centralization fragility, demographic contraction, and embodiment erosion. The central diagnosis: systems built to maximize legibility and optimization under scale become efficient, coherent, and blind — and therefore fragile.
2 - civilization.md — The Arc: From Hunter-Gatherer Bands to the Kingdom of God Humans lived 95% of their existence in egalitarian bands where legibility was low and relational accountability was high. Agriculture, surplus, and ego enabled civilization through coordination advantage that harmed individuals. Genesis describes this transition structurally. Jesus embodied kenotic communal love; institutions captured and corrupted the vision. The tradition keeps trying to return to what it was pointing toward.
3 - drift.md — Systems, Drift, and the Human Problem Drift operates through broken feedback at the system level and through justification at the individual level. The beast grows by taking, justifying, and expanding. Kenosis counters through voluntary restraint, the maintenance of genuine accountability, and exit. Ritual encodes hard-won wisdom; prayer holds community in open attention. The cross encodes the kenotic structure permanently as the counter-pattern.
Reading Order
1 - legibility trap is the structural analysis and the natural starting point. 2 - civilization places that analysis in historical and theological context. 3 - drift examines the individual-level dynamics that aggregate into civilizational drift. The three documents are complementary; each can also be read independently.
